What Is a Dashcam Hardwire Kit?

Second, and this is the real reason most people buy one, it lets the dashcam stay powered when the ignition is off. Without a hardwire kit, your camera switches off the moment you turn the key, along with any hope of catching what happens to your car while it is parked. 
Do You Need a Hardwire Kit?
Here is the honest answer. You need one only if you want parking mode. If you only care about recording while you drive, a regular 12V cable does the job perfectly well, and there is no reason to spend more or open up your fuse box.

Parking Mode: The Main Reason to Hardwire
Parking mode is what a hardwire kit is really for. Once connected, your dashcam can stay in a low power standby while the car is off, watching for movement or impact instead of recording continuously and draining the battery.
Most parking mode setups rely on the G sensor to know when to wake up. A bump, a knock, or someone leaning on the bumper triggers the sensor, and the camera wakes from standby to record the moment and the seconds around it. This is what actually catches a hit and run or a parking lot scrape, since the camera is not burning through storage and battery recording an empty parking lot for eight hours straight.
Will It Drain My Car Battery?
This is the question that stops most people from hardwiring in the first place, and it is a fair one. A car battery that will not start the engine is a much bigger problem than a missed parking mode clip.
The answer is no, not if the kit has a low voltage cutoff, and every hardwire kit worth buying has one. The cutoff constantly checks the battery voltage while the car is parked. When it drops to a preset level, usually somewhere around 11.6V to 11.8V, the kit cuts power to the dashcam automatically. This leaves enough charge in the battery to start the car, even if the dashcam has been running in parking mode for hours. This threshold sits close to what Battery Council International considers a meaningfully discharged lead acid car battery, so the cutoff is protecting real capacity, not an arbitrary number.
The one thing to watch is a car that already sits unused for many days at a stretch. If your car does not start regularly, any accessory drawing even a small standby current adds up. In that case, it is worth switching parking mode off on the days the car is not moving
DIY vs Professional Installation
Hardwiring a dashcam is not difficult, but it does mean opening your fuse box and working with your car's electrical system, so it is not for everyone.
If you want to try it yourself, here is the general process.

Locate your car's fuse box, usually under the dashboard or in the engine bay.

Use a circuit tester or multimeter to find a switched fuse for the ACC or ignition wire, and a constant fuse for battery power.

Connect the ground wire to a bare metal point on the car body.

Route the cable along the A pillar and headliner, tucking it under the trim with the pry tool included in the kit.

Plug the other end into the dashcam and test that it powers on and off correctly with the ignition.
