How Loop Recording Works
Think of the SD card as a loop rather than one long tape. Instead of saving your whole day as a single giant file, the dashcam breaks it into fixed length clips, typically 1, 3, or 5 minutes.
Recording in segments matters for two reasons. Shorter files are easier to find and export when you need one specific moment, and if a single file gets corrupted, you only lose that clip and not the whole day's driving.
Once the card fills up, the dashcam looks for the oldest segment and writes over it first. This repeats on its own, over and over, for as long as the camera is on.
Does Loop Recording Delete Footage I Need?
No, not if your dashcam's G sensor is doing its job. Loop recording only overwrites normal, unprotected footage. The moment it detects a hard brake, a collision, or a sudden jolt, the dashcam locks that clip into a separate protected folder.
Locked clips are not part of the loop at all. They sit outside it, safe, no matter how many times the rest of the card gets overwritten. They stay there until you delete them yourself or move them off the card.
The real risk is not loop recording itself. It is driving with the G sensor switched off, or set too low to catch a genuine impact. Keep it on at a sensible level, and the footage that matters will still be there when you go looking for it.
How Loop Recording and the G Sensor Protect Your Crash Clip
A G sensor is a small internal sensor that detects sudden changes in motion, like hard braking, a pothole, or an actual collision. Loop recording and the G sensor are built to work together, not as two separate features you have to manage on your own.
When the G sensor triggers, two things happen at once. The dashcam keeps looping normally through the rest of the card. At the same time, it locks the clip covering the event. That locked clip never enters the loop at all.
This is also why sensor sensitivity matters. Set it too high, and ordinary bumps get locked and quietly eat into your free storage. Set it too low, and it may miss the one moment you actually needed protected.
