Which Memory Card Is Best for a Dashcam? (The Quick Answer)

Why Standard Cards Wear Out Faster in a Dashcam
A dashcam does not use a memory card the way a phone does. It records in a loop, deleting old footage and writing new footage every few minutes, all day, every day. Over several months, this adds up to thousands of write and delete cycles on the same card.
Standard cards can handle this for a while, but Indian conditions make the wear worse than most drivers expect. Cars parked in direct sun regularly cross 60 degrees Celsius on the dashboard, and heat accelerates wear on a card's memory chips. Stop and go city traffic also means more start and stop recording cycles than steady highway driving.
How much footage you record matters too, since higher resolution video and more channels write more data to the card every hour.

What Is the Difference Between High Endurance and Standard Cards
Card endurance is usually measured in terabytes written, or TBW, an industry testing standard set by JEDEC. This is the total amount of data a card can write over its lifetime before it starts to fail. A 256GB high endurance card is typically rated for around 20,000 hours of continuous recording, which works out to an estimated 60 to 120 TBW. A 32GB standard card built for occasional use in phones and tablets carries no official endurance rating at all, with an estimated TBW closer to 15 to 30.
A fast card is not automatically an endurance card. Some premium cards are engineered for quick read and write bursts rather than the slow, constant overwriting a dashcam does all day, and their estimated endurance can sit below a purpose built high endurance card of similar size. Speed and endurance are two different specs, and for a dashcam, endurance matters more.
A large capacity general purpose card can carry a reasonable estimated TBW too, but without an official endurance rating from the manufacturer, that number is an estimate rather than a guarantee. What Do U3, V30, Class 10 and A1 Mean
Dashcam and card packaging is covered in symbols that mean very little unless you already know what to look for.
U3 and V30 both describe minimum sustained write speed, which is the speed that matters most for continuous video recording. Class 10 is an older, less precise rating that most modern cards already meet. A1 describes performance for running small apps and is not particularly relevant to dashcam footage. For a dashcam, look for U3 or V30 first. Either rating can keep up with continuous high resolution recording without dropping frames.
What Size Card Do You Need? 64GB vs 128GB vs 256GB

A 64GB card typically holds several hours of loop recorded footage from a single channel dashcam like the nextro X300 SoloView. A 128GB card roughly doubles that, giving you a full day or more of driving footage before older clips are overwritten.

If you drive for a living, such as with Ola or Uber, choose the largest high endurance card your dashcam supports, since a bigger capacity only helps if the card underneath can handle continuous recording.
How Often to Format Your Card (and Why)
Formatting clears the small errors that build up in a card's file system before they turn into bigger problems like corrupted footage or missing files. Most nextro dashcams have a format option in the settings menu, and this should be routine maintenance, not something you only do after a problem shows up.
Format your card about once a month if you drive daily, or sooner if you notice the dashcam taking longer to start recording or save clips. Formatting the dashcam's own menu is safer than formatting on a computer, since it sets up the card exactly the way the dashcam expects.
